Prasonisi: Where Two Seas Meet at the Tip of Rhodes
At the very southern end of the island, 92 kilometres from Rhodes Town and 40 from Lindos, lies one of the most distinctive places on Rhodes. Prasonisi — sometimes spelled Prassoníssi — is a cape with a split personality, and it changes shape with the seasons.
Island or peninsula?
In summer, when water levels drop low enough, Prasonisi is joined to Rhodes by a sandy isthmus, making it a peninsula you can walk across. In winter, when the water rises, that strip vanishes and Prasonisi becomes a true island. At its southernmost point stands the Prasonisi Lighthouse. The nearest Greek village is Katavia, but there’s also a purpose-built seasonal settlement here with motels, convenience stores, restaurants and windsurf rentals. Nearby lies Vroulia, an ancient settlement with an old mosaic-tiled floor still in place.

A windsurfing and kitesurfing mecca
Prasonisi is famous among watersports enthusiasts for its predictable, reliable winds — steady rather than gusty, blowing in a constant direction at particular times of day. The geography is what makes it special: on one side of the cape sits the Aegean, with good waves and views well suited to advanced surfers; on the other lies the Mediterranean, its flat water ideal for beginners. The high season falls in July and August, when the flat side in particular gets very busy with surfers from around the world.
