Afandou Beach: Room to Breathe on One of Rhodes’ Longest Shores

One of the longest beaches on Rhodes, Afandou lies about 19 kilometres south of Rhodes Town, wrapped around a natural bay with the village of Afandou set just behind it. It’s a beach of space and ease — part commercially organised, part left entirely natural, so you can choose exactly the kind of day you want.

Space for everyone

Made up of sand and pebbles, Afandou offers plenty of rental facilities alongside its wilder stretches. You’ll see young people racing jet-skis, locals dropping in for fish at the tavernas, and visitors stretched out along the shoreline — and yet, because the beach is so vast, no one ever feels crowded. There’s simply room for everybody.

What to expect in the water

One thing to know: the water deepens quite abruptly here, so it suits confident swimmers more than small paddlers. The trade-off is water of excellent quality that stays remarkably fresh and clear even at the height of summer. Beach and watersports centres dot the organised sections, while a handful of small restaurants and fish tavernas — some with rooms to rent — and canteens sit just above the sand.

A round of golf by the sea

Afandou has another string to its bow: the Rhodes golf course runs right along the coast road behind the beach, making this one of the few spots on the island where a morning on the fairways and an afternoon by the sea fit neatly into the same day.
